Cuban cigar roller coming to NOTL
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE - There are a lot of unique people and places to see in Niagara-on-the-Lake, but a Cuban cigar roller? That has got to be a first.
For first time since Customs House Cigars opened its doors in 1996, a cigar roller, direct from Cuba, is coming Aug. 16 to demonstrate the art and skill of rolling fine cigars.
“We believe this is the first time there has been a Cuban cigar roller in Niagara-on-the-Lake,” says Ian Wilson, proprietor of Customs House Cigars.
“This is a unique opportunity for visitors,” he added.
Master roller Tania Barinia Perera Siverio, manager of the Cienfuegos Cigar Factory in central south Cuba, is in Canada with an interpreter through Cuban cigar distributor Havana House.
“On this tour, Tania will be rolling robustos and coronas,” said Wilson.
“The robustos are short and thick and contain 100 per cent Cuban filler, binder and wrapper tobacco leafs. The coronas are made with the same three tobaccos, but are a slimmer and longer cigar.
“Most Cuban cigar rollers are women and we are really pleased to be showcasing Tania so people can see firsthand the dexterity required to roll a premium cigar,” Ian says.
Tania will be at Customs House Cigars, located at 126 Queen St. beside Valu-Mart, from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
